The aviation industry is constantly evolving to ensure the highest level of safety and efficiency in airport operations. One of the key initiatives aimed at achieving this goal is PJ.03a, a project that focuses on integrating Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) surface operations into airport operations. This integration will enable RPAS to operate safely and efficiently alongside manned aviation, while also improving overall situational awareness.

To achieve this goal, PJ.03a will leverage advanced technologies such as Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) augmented systems, automated taxiway lights and virtual stop bars, data link information exchange between controllers and pilots/vehicle, and on-board advanced vision systems. These technologies will provide more accurate navigation information, enhance situational awareness, and ultimately improve safety.

In addition to improving safety, PJ.03a aims to increase the efficiency of airport operations by optimizing resource allocation and improving current infrastructure and Communication Navigation Surveillance (CNS) systems. The project will achieve this through enhanced integration between aircraft and ground systems, which is expected to be achieved through the full implementation of the System Wide Information Management (SWIM) concept.

The implementation of a collaborative decision-making process involving all relevant stakeholders will also ensure an optimization of airport resources allocation. This will enable airports to predict and manage ground operations more effectively, even in adverse weather conditions.

PJ.03a is a crucial step towards achieving the future European Air Traffic Management (ATM) system's vision of integrating airports as nodes into the network. The project is part of the SESAR 2020 Multi-Annual Program for the period 2016-2019 and will contribute to the key feature of High Performing Airport Operations.

In conclusion, PJ.03a's focus on integrating RPAS surface operations into airport operations will enhance safety and efficiency in airport operations.
